Sorry, Fellow Foodies for not posting anything recently. We are working diligently to get our website up and running and I assure you all it will be well worth it!
I want to share with you all a post I had placed on FoodieGems.com around Easter regarding great customer service I received and how they should be acknowledged. I hope you not only take the time to read it, but also take a short moment and do what I did. I assure you that the 10-15 seconds it takes to do it will make a lasting impact on someone else's career and life. Enjoy!
I had an experience this morning that I want to share with you all. I went to a local fast food chain this morning to get breakfast and I went inside and ordered my food to go. The manager that was there was unengaging, and the other two employees I saw were in a bad mood. Then comes an employee that was in training. He had a huge smile on his face and he welcomed me and took my order. I won't bore you with all the details, but he did a fantastic job. So as I sat there and waited for my order, I noticed a small sign next to me that read "If you received great service today, please ring this bell." I thought it was interesting and cheesy at the same time. Then I received my order. It was complete and I thanked him. He thanked me with a smile and told me to have a great day and a Happy Easter. As I walked away to my car and got inside, I realized I just made a FATAL mistake. I just received great service. I was so wrapped up in all the things I need to do today AND the fact that I got bad service from the Manager that I FAILED TO ACKNOWLEDGE the behavior of this great employee! I went back inside, I went to the counter, and I rang the bell. The employee and the manager turned around and the employee had a huge smile on his face and thanked me.
So here is my thought for all of you: we are so quick to complain about bad service and immediately dismiss it as bad operations, bad leadership, bad company, etc. But when do we take an equal stake in the transaction? What do we bring to the table to make the experience pleasant. Sure, they are "paid" to do a job, but who doesn't need a little encouragement? We all do. So when have we taken the time to ACKNOWLEDGE great customer service? How is it different from telling your child "Great Job in getting your chores done today"; or "Thank you for holding the door open for the lady"?
It isn't. It is an investment into their psyche to make them a better person by reinforcing a behavior that will mold them into someone better.
I want to thank you all for taking the time to read this post. And we thank those of you for being a FAN of FoodieGems. Without people like you, we would be nothing.
